Results of the 2009 NCSM election will be posted on the NCSM Web Site by the beginning of December. Look for details in the NCSM spring Newsletter. New Board members will be inducted at the NCSM Annual Conference in Washington, DC, April 20-22, 2009.
Open Position: Regional Director, Southern US 1
Region includes: Bermuda, Florida, Georgia, Military AA: APO/FPO, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virgin Islands, Virginia
Summary of Duties:
- Reside or be employed in the region represented. If during the term of office a Director moves from the region, a new Director shall be appointed by the President.
- Represent the region at all Board meetings.
- Organize events for members of the Council at NCTM and/or meetings within the region as appropriate.
- Plan meetings for members of the Council at any NCTM conference scheduled through December of the year the Director's term expires.
- Promote membership in the Council among those eligible.
- Encourage the support of Council activities.
- Recommend members from the region to be considered by the Nominations Committee as candidates for offices in the Council.
- Seek Glenn Gilbert National Leadership Award nominees.
- Prepare written reports of regional activities to be submitted at meetings of the Board.
- Assist in planning the Annual Conference.
- If the Annual Conference is located in the region served during the term of office: coordinate all Regional Director assistance at ticketed, major, and special conference events; and provide local assistance, support, and publicity within the region.
- Write and solicit articles for official NCSM publications from Council members within the region.
- Assume such duties as the President and/or Board may determine.

Susan Birnie
Candidate's Statement:
Susan Birnie is the Curriculum Specialist for Mathematics for Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia. She has taught for 34 years. She has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master's degree in early childhood education. Her range of teaching experience runs from kindergarten to middle school and the university level. She is a frequent presenter of professional development such as Lenses on Learning for elementary principals and the 1999 TIMSS Video Study for secondary teachers and administrators. She is a past president of the Virginia Council of Mathematics Supervision. Since 1988, Ms. Birnie has been involved with projects supporting math specialists as change agents at the elementary level. She was a member of the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition Committee that initiated the proposal for the Virginia Mathematics Specialist endorsement for teachers of K-8 grades.

Candidate's Statement:
NCSM has played a significant and critical role throughout my career as both a teacher and supervisor in school mathematics and as a teacher educator at the university level. I have been privileged and honored to serve NCSM, NCTM, the College Board, and several state and local professional organizations in a variety of leadership roles to promote quality mathematics education for all students. The NCSM PRIME Leadership Framework challenges each of us as leaders in mathematics education to create a climate of equal access and opportunity for all students in learning mathematics and to promote the growth of professional learning communities so that teachers may engage in collaborative efforts that seek effective ways to teach and learn mathematics. I welcome the opportunity to represent and serve my colleagues in mathematics education leadership in striving to achieve these goals.
