Fractions in the Olympics

An Explorer activity describing a game that encourages children to add unit fractions with the same or different denominators.

Description: This game encourages children to add unit fractions with the same or different denominators.
Objectives: To provide practice in adding fractions with like and unlike denominators.
Resources/Materials: Worksheet (to be enlarged or available by downloading a Claris Works or Acrobat file), spinner.
Activities/Procedures:
- Spin the spinner twice.
- Find the sum of the two fractions.
- Proceed down or up the slopes to the first circle or rectangle that matches your denominator (in lowest terms).
- Shade in your answer.
- The winner is the first to land on the last circle or rectangle.
Evaluation: Students will check each other's work.
